“The Fire Urchin and the Desert Heart”

Off Komodo, I crossed paths with a fire urchin—a living warning sign pulsing with ultraviolet sparks, scarlet spines, and pure audacity. It became the spark for these earrings.

Made with rare Australian Mookaite—a radiolarite born from ancient plankton in inland seas near Mooka Creek (“running water” in Tharrkari)—its ochres, maroons, and ivory veins are brushed by trace iron oxides and manganese. Set in a 22k gold-plated base from Istanbul and Seoul, and finished with tiny Indian Carnelians and Citrines, they measure 6.3 cm of geologic attitude.

Once carried by Aboriginal travellers and later loved in the 1970s Australiana Revival, Mookaite bridges reef and desert, deep time and bright rebellion—perfect for anyone drawn to beauty that glows a little dangerously.
