N°06 Statement Earrings

Jewelry should feel alive, just like the creatures that inspire it. These earrings on the left are a direct design interpretation of the underside of a sunflower seastar, which I found off Komodo Island. This species is one of the largest and fastest-moving seastars in the world, with up to 24 arms and thousands of tube feet that create a mesmerizing, rippling motion as it glides over the seafloor. The Carnelian and Pyrite gemstones, combined with gold elements mimicking the spines and tube feet, transform this biological marvel into wearable art.

Sunflower seastars are known for their fiery orange and red tones, which shift in hue depending on their environment. But what fascinated me most was their underside—the network of translucent, flexible tube feet and sharp, protective spines that work together to create motion and grip onto surfaces. These earrings mimic that structure:

• Carnelian (Faceted Orange Gemstones) – The intense, fiery orange of the Carnelian stone perfectly captures the warm, fleshy tones of the seastar’s underside, where thousands of tube feet extend and contract in rhythmic waves. Its faceted cut allows light to interact dynamically, just like the natural variations in the seastar’s soft tissue.
• Pyrite (Metallic Grey Accent Stones) – Pyrite adds a contrasting metallic shimmer, referencing the way light reflects off the ridged spines and mineral deposits sometimes found on a seastar’s skin. It also balances the warmth of the Carnelian, much like the cool-toned shadows seen between the tube feet.
• Gold Beaded Framing (Inspired by Tube Feet and Spines) – The most striking textural feature of a sunflower seastar is the dense arrangement of tube feet beneath its arms, which move in coordinated motions. The gold beaded detailing replicates this fine, intricate pattern, creating a sense of motion even when the earrings are still.
• Gold Teardrop Charms (Mimicking Water Movement and Feeding Behavior) – The small gold teardrop charms at the base of the earrings nod to the way a sunflower seastar extends and retracts its tube feet, often using them to guide food toward its mouth. These subtle dangling details give the earrings an elegant sense of movement.
