There is a good reason why Paua is called "Marine Opal". I brought back lots of Paua from my last two New Zealand trips, where it is rightly revered as one of the most beautiful and culturally significant materials. It feels almost like a privilege to be able to work with this iridescent raw material that can do no wrong. I have paired the Paua in these pieces with purple Amethyst recycled glass to pay homage to the stunning hues that define Paua.
While the Paua truly shines, Amethyst, that irresistible purple variety of Quartz, which owes its luscious colouration mainly to irradiation (yes light!) and impurities of iron, brings out the purple in the paua even more. The Greek word "amethystos" literally means "not drunken". So yes, amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness and that is why wine goblets were often carved from it. Apologies – the earrings won’t help with this. But the serious splash of purple can boost your spirit; it can remind you of that last colourful holiday …or simply to turn that simple outfit into something altogether more stunning. The most iridescent Paua is paired with a faceted Amethyst from Brazil and supported by tiny faceted Agates and Recycled Glass.
