Biologists have extrapolated that in nature, only about one in 400,000 pearl oysters contains a black (more accurately grey) pearl. So I guess at this stage I would like to sincerely thank you Mr Mikimoto – eccentric Japanese mastermind who made pearl farming a reality about 100 years ago! Black Pearls, once considered freaks of nature, are these days very much though after because of their crisp & sleek look. As is so often the case for me, a marine creature, the unbelievable Nembrotha cristatanudibranch, has inspired this vivid and pure colour combination. This marine critter is a tiny polka-dotted velvety black – emerald sea slug, which advertises its toxicity (hey – don’t mess with me!) through its evocative pattern.
The sleek slate grey pearls in this necklace are balanced with emerald & verdigris hued Druzy Agate and Quartz and complemented with Aquamarine elements and ample silver.
If you –like me- wear a lot of black (or white) this super contemporary marine piece could just be for you.
Like all our pieces, it is one of a kind, handcrafted with love and care in our studio near Byron Bay.
