These statement earrings are all about our collective attraction to the vivacious & mesmerising semi-precious Lapis Lazuli set into a rich organic, coral-look-alike golden base. This irresistibly ultra-blue stone has been mined for longer than Gold (for about 10000 years in what is Afghanistan today), but it is the Egyptians who made it much more “mainstream”, by turning it into a pigment around 4000 years ago. During the time of the Dutch Master Painters such as Vermeer it was the most expensive ultramarine pigment on the planet - thankfully this vivid semi-precious stone has become much more affordable today.
In this piece the richness of Afghani Lapis Lazuli is contrasted with tiny faceted Agates and plenty of rich organic gold base -that for an ex coral reef biologist like me– is simply reminiscent of a coral cross section.
Psychologists suggest we all share a continued sub-conscious attraction to the luscious Lapis because there is nothing much else on this planet that is of such intense blue colouring. For myself, I need no explanation as to why I love Lapis Lazuli – the deepness of the ultra-blue with its fine golden pyrite inclusions fascinates me every time again and works so well with so many outfits!
Like all our pieces, it is handcrafted with love and care in our studio near Byron Bay. These eclectic limited-edition statement earrings are made from the following semi-precious stones and findings:
