N°35 Christmas 2025 Special Earrings

In a tide pool near Lennox Head, I found a brittle star sprawled across a salmon-pink sponge, its fine lines tracing perfect velvety rock pool geometry. The pattern felt uncannily like Mookaite — Australia’s own desert masterpiece, its veins painted by iron and manganese in shades of ochre, maroon, and ivory.

That encounter became these earrings: Mookaite discs paired with a gold filigree element echoing the sponge’s delicate lattice, finished with tiny Indian Hessonites and Carnelians glowing like reef embers.  They are 5.8cm short and set into a 22k gold -plated base from Istanbul & Seoul.

Born near Mooka Creek (“running water” in Tharrkari), this stone once guided Aboriginal travellers and later lit up the Australiana Revival of the 1970s.

A meeting of reef and range, these are earrings for those who understand that beauty — like tide lines — always comes back around.
