The Clam That Dreamed in Color

When I first encountered this giant clam, I was struck by the extraordinary complexity of its mantle tissue—the shifting mosaic of turquoise, inky black, and luminous blue seemed almost otherworldly. These biological patterns are not random; they serve functional roles in light absorption and protection, yet to me they became a visual language, a blueprint for design. Translating that intricate natural architecture into jewellery was an exhilarating process of ecology becoming artistry.

For these earrings, I chose chrysocolla as the dominant stone, its swirling turquoise-green echoing the clam’s fluid tissue. I paired them with the luminosity of Chalcedony, Green Onyx and Lapis Lazuli set into Sterling silver hammered bars and  silver-plated ear hooks. 

In wearing them, I hope one feels the same awe I experienced underwater—an encounter with life’s ability to astonish through form and color. As both biologist and designer, I see these earrings as a living connection between science and adornment, a reminder that every reef creature carries a story of resilience and beauty worth carrying into our daily lives.
