When I came across the rectangle Landscape Jasper beads in Kyoto, I knew I had to get them. Each one of them is like a tiny ink painting - a universe upon itself. What do you see? Mountains, trees, running horses? The chemistry is even more exciting - the black pigment is Manganese that has crystallized out in microscopic grooves of the stone - so each one really is a unique chemical painting. Paired with Lava that I hand-gilded and the smoothest Russian Onyx and Brazilian Agates. Using the same technique the painter Gustav Klimt used to create his unbelievable gold effects on his paintings, I used 24k gold-plated leaf to gild meek black lava beads, turning in one into a gilded lave bead resembling a world map of imaginary golden continents. No country has more design influence over me than Japan. The collective dedication of the Japanese people to making everything they touch beautiful really resonates with me. So, this bracelet is an homage to the graceful Japanese people - may we all be more open to inviting understated beauty in whatever shape or form into our life.
